North Port's housing stock is rooted in its history as one of Florida's largest platted subdivisions, and much of the city consists of single-family homes on generous lots, many with room for pools, garages, and outdoor space. Development began in earnest in the 1950s and 1960s, giving some of the older neighborhoods a mix of mid-century ranch homes and updated residences. The city maintains a network of neighborhood parks with sports fields, playgrounds, and trails, and nearby Myakka River State Park provides one of Florida's oldest and largest protected natural areas. Wellen Park's downtown brings restaurants, events, and a town-center gathering space to the southern end of the city, and the Gulf beaches of Venice and Englewood lie a short drive to the west. Public schools in North Port are part of the Sarasota County Schools district, which serves the city alongside the rest of the county and operates North Port High School and a network of elementary and middle schools. The district is regarded among the stronger systems in Florida. Alongside the traditional public schools, North Port has charter schools and private options, and the city's residential growth has been accompanied by continued investment in new school facilities, including campuses serving the Wellen Park area.

Interstate 75 runs north-south through North Port, with exits serving the city and providing direct highway access to Sarasota and Tampa to the north and Fort Myers to the south. US 41 and River Road run through the western part of the city, linking North Port to Venice, Englewood, and the Gulf beaches. Toledo Blade Boulevard and Sumter Boulevard are among the city's main internal corridors. Regional airports in Sarasota-Bradenton and Fort Myers serve the area for broader travel, complementing the highway connections that anchor the city's commuter geography.

Warm Mineral Springs Park is North Port's signature natural attraction, offering swimming in a mineral-rich spring that holds a near-constant temperature of about 85 degrees. The Myakka River, an Outstanding Florida Water, and Myakkahatchee Creek provide paddling, fishing, and wildlife viewing, while Myakka River State Park — one of Florida's oldest and largest parks — lies just east of the city with hiking, biking, kayaking, and airboat tours. The city operates a system of community parks such as Atwater Community Park with sports fields, playgrounds, and trails, and the Gulf beaches of Venice and Englewood are within a short drive.
